Republicans Hate Science
Under the auspices of keeping federal spending under control, Republican congressmen have launched yet another attack on the basic scientific research that could lead to useful, potentially job-creating discoveries.
House majority leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) announced last week that the YouCut Citizen Review, a crowdsourcing tool for identifying “wasteful spending that should be cut,” would make its very first target the National Science Foundation.
The NSF budget request for FY2011 is $7 billion. That sounds like a lot of money, but it's money that creates jobs and moves us all forward. At the very least, there's a lot of easier places to cut that sort of money.
The YouCut website wants you to go to the NSF search page, search for some keywords, and see what you get back. Cantor offers a couple choice ones right from the start:
Step One: Look for Questionable Grants Click here to open the National Science Foundation website. In the "Search Award For" field, try some keywords, such as: success, culture, media, games, social norm, lawyers, museum, leisure, stimulus, etc. to bring up grants. If you find a grant that you believe is a waste of your taxdollars, be sure to record the award number.
What fucking asshats.
